Birthday Fit for a King

I cannot believe my little boy is FIVE years old!  Sam has been "my baby" for such a long time, that it makes me sad to see him start joining the ranks of the big kids.

He really looked forward to his birthday and had a great day.  This is us playing "Go Fish with the Old Maid cards" - which is one of our daytime favorites.  Man, I'm going to miss having this boy with me during the day when he goes to kindergarten.

Sam wore his crown for a good part of the day.  He had preschool that day and wore it to preschool!

For dinner, we had pizza-as-big-as-your-head!

And his cake of choice: caramel brownies!

He enjoyed opening presents and playing with "the brothers" that night.  The easel was fun because Ellis and Sam could both do it at the same time.

The big highlight for Sam was going to Medieval Times the day after his birthday.  He chose to do this instead of a party!

Sam has been obsessed with knights for over a year now.  You may remember that he had a knight party for his birthday last year.  I was happy that he didn't ask me to make another castle cake.  Phew!

The Seversons came along to "the knight show," which is what Sam calls Medieval Times.  You can see from their expressions how thrilled they were!

In actuality, I think they all really loved it.  It's always fun to see live horses, knights with weapons, and guys fighting each other.

Sam loved cheering for our yellow knight!

He wasn't able to finish his "baby dragon meat," so he brought it home to eat the next day for lunch.  The server told us it was dragon (tastes like chicken), and Sam was pretty sure it was true!

Sam enjoyed working on his painting skills the next day. He wants to be a professional artist when he grows up!

He was giggling with pure delight as he splattered this new paint onto the paper.  It splatters so much better than the thick finger paint we had before!

The highest compliment you can give Sam is, "Wow, that looks like a Jackson Pollock!"  What do you think?
