Overheard . . . the long "catching up" edition

H: "Once I've read one encyclopedia so much that I've got it memorized, I read another encyclopedia that I haven't read in a while."

E: Henry, how many people are at your school?
H: I think...400?
E: Okay, I got it.  Next time we go to your school, we gotta see EVERYBODY, and YOU gotta count 'em!

E: "Mom, I think Joe [the crossing guard] died because he was so old . . . or was it because he drank hand sanitizer?  I think maybe because he was so old."

E: "Mom, why is Sloane a bad singer, even though she already got baptized?"

E: "Why is Isaac still mean, even though he is already baptized?"

E: "I hope Satan repents, so he can come to Primary."

E: "Dominic said he has actually defeated Darth Vader before.  I always thought Star Wars guys were just pretend, but I guess they are real."

E: "I think Charles Ives is hot.  I think Mikhail Gorbachev is hot, and Gonzo is hot."

E (While singing Newsies songs): "I'm gonna be Specks" (one of the Newsies characters).
(5 minutes later) "I like this song.  I'm not gonna be Specks.  I'm just gonna be every guy."

S: "I wanna do lego dot com!"  (he actually wanted to play with the Lego guys)

J: And Nephi saw Jesus . . .
S: I saw Jesus too!"
J: You did?  When did you see Jesus?
S: In Chicago.
(For a while, he was saying that EVERYTHING happened "in Chicago."

S: "I wanna hold you in the book" (I want you to hold me while you read to me)

S: "I want my drink of milk BIGGA!  Make it BIGGA!"  (fill it up)
(This has evolved to Sam just holding out his sippy cup, grunting, and saying "BIG!"  or "Drinka Milk BIG!")

S: "Mom, I don't want to brink my drinka milk.  I'll stay it home."

S: "I don't want to wear shoes . . . or socks.  I'll wear just my feet."

S: "Mom, my extra job is going to my birthday party . . . with my jammies on."
(this is when he thought it was going to be his birthday party pretty much every day)

S: "No, I no like pointment!" (the word he used for "ointment" that we had to put on his diaper rash.  Every time we changed him, he would yell, "No cream!  No pointment!  No sour cream!  And NO baby powda!")

B: You forgot to eat your noodles, Sam.
S: I don't like noodles.  Noodles taste . . . not like cake.  And I like cake . . . and cupcakes."

S: "I'm thankful for sprinkles with cupcakes on top of it!"

S: "Mom, is me gonna have a nap today?  I just want to be happy (i.e. stay awake)."

And So Begins the Artist Phase

You all know that Ellis has an uncommon interest in people.  Yes, he loves the Church General Authorities and the U.S. Presidents, but really his love is just for PEOPLE of all kinds.  Faces, names, quick facts -- he drinks it all up . . . and there aren't too many other things he IS interested in.  When he received the artist and scientist figurines as gifts, he definitely loved them.  He learned all of their names and played with them a fair amount.

But the interest didn't catch fire until THIS morning . . .

when Henry discovered that Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso are featured in his encyclopedia!  It was a flurry of two boys, rushing back and forth between the playroom and the living room, Ellis grabbing artist figures, Henry flipping frantically through pages of the encyclopedia.  These two can be quite the team when their interests happen to align.  They were absolutely electrified by this discovery!

And what fun to match the artist figurines with their actual paintings!

Shortly afterward, Henry found Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein featured in the Science section, and they were able to make another match!

They continued to play and talk about the artists and scientists for the rest of the morning.  It was probably a half hour later when we heard Ellis call out, "Now Henry!  Bring Isaac Newton back to the playroom!  They're having a very important church meeting."

The next day, we found this book at the library:

And since then, Ellis and Henry have both been intent on learning all about the famous artists and their works.  I must admit that while I swear I didn't push this obsession on them, I'm pretty happy about it.  More on the Artist Phase in posts to come.  Stay tuned.  I'm on a catching up rampage!

Goggles

E: "Henry, now we BOTH have goggles!"

"(But I think mine are more specialer, because they've got crabs)."

Overheard

E: Henry, Dads don't shop!  Only moms shop.
H: Yes they do. Remember when we went shopping with Dad for Mom's birthday?  On Amazon?

H: (dreamily) White rice tastes like air on a day that feels JUST PERFECT.

H: (dreamily, again) Mom, remember that time at Victory Field when we saw all those ants, and I was watching them and feeding them part of my pumpkin muffin? That was one of the best days of my LIFE!

E: Mom, if you say I can't watch any shows while somebody takes a shower, then that means you already died.

E: Mom, if I don't watch one more show, then I won't have a spirit.

A Few Treasures

We've been saving up Henry and Ellis quotes for a few months.  We thought we'd better share a few treasures.  Enjoy!

Henry
(to Jenn) "From now on, if you leave me alone, I'll leave you alone--Okay?"

"Me and Ellis both have the same plan . . . to DESTROY our parents!"

"Sometimes I go in the bathroom, take some extra toilet paper and chew it up."

(after watching a homemade Star Wars YouTube video) "I never knew light sabers were real until I saw that show."

B: Did Mom already get clothes out for you?
H: No.  Well, actually I'm not sure.  It's still just a theory.

(opening some chap stick he found in his stocking) "Lip Smackers!  Ha ha!  Santa got me pretend lip stick!"

Ellis
(while sorting laundry)
J:  We're gonna put this one in the pile to be sprayed.
E:  Oh yeah, from Dad being such a dirty guy.

"I'm gonna give Sam a blessing: 'Behold, be careful Samuel, and don't break the walls!'"

(looking at a picture of Adam Smith addressing some economists--don't ask) "When is Adam Smith going to say 'In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen' and sit down so somebody else can talk in the microphone?"

(authoritatively) "It is proposed that we sustain Elder Einstein, Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, and Nikola Tesla.  Please manifest it."

J: Ellis, who is the President right now?
E: Barack Obama!  Who is going to be the President-right-now next?
J: I don't know; what do you think?
E: Maybe Tanner.  But not the Utah Tanner.  Eldon S. Tanner (We later found out he was getting N. Eldon Tanner confused with Marion G. Romney, whom he had mixed up with Mitt Romney).
(a few minutes later) E: A golden pancake is going to be the prophet after Joseph Smith.

"I can't sit in my car seat, because I can't sit very well . . . like Elder Packer" (he couldn't sit very well because he had a dirty diaper).

(Jenn passes gas)
E: Say excuse me!
J:  Excuse me.
E: (wistfully) I hope I do that soon.

(after Ben's shower) "It's foggy in here.  We need Rudolph!"

Remember when Ellis would make us all have alternative identities?  Thankfully, that has subsided, but he does occasionally have some relapses.  Here are two especially unique ones:

- Joseph Smith (E), Emma Smith (J), Heavenly Father (B), Jesus (H), My new baby from Africa (S)
- Clark (E), Lewis (B), Sacajawea (J)

And finally, Ellis still has a few words that he has no idea he pronounces wrong:
- Stop and Shot (Stop & Shop)
- Two-fick (Toothpick)
- Two-faced (Toohpaste)
- Episote (Episode -- Henry says this one wrong too!)
- E-merican Flag (American Flag -- where did the E come from?  We have no idea.  He says America just fine)
- Of-ouncements (Announcements)

We can't wait for Sam to join in the fun!
